From Shivani - Oh and by the way.. I was doing my chem homework and i came across an article about why the Titanic sank... apparently the steel that was used to build the Titanic was extremely brittle because of its high sulfur content, so when it struck the iceberg, instead of bending, the steel shattered. Just thought I would share!
So,did Andrew's make a mistake in the selection of the steel that was used?

To Our Faculty & Friends and Family,
For the first time in its history, Proscenium is presenting a fully student produced production of Lost in Yonkers. This presentation is student directed, produced, designed and executed.
Working for the past several months, the members of the Proscenium teams have put together an amazing interpretation of this Neil Simon classic and if anyone is wondering why Neil Simons Lost in Yonkers won both the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, come and see Prosceniums production of this Simon favorite a textbook example of how to make a decades old comedy seem as fresh as if it were only now getting its world premiere.
Beside the incredible work my fellow Proscenium members have put into this production for artistic reasons, there is another motivation driving us. As many of you might know, the lighting in the auditorium is in need of replacement and repair. None of the original lighting has ever been replaced by the District since installation. Proscenium has been purchasing lights for years these lights being used for all school functions and activities that are held in the auditorium.
The current lights are now starting to fail, leaving us with very little left to light the stage. We are asking for your help by supporting an upcoming student production of Lost in Yonkers. These lights are the general lighting needed for daily usage, not our lighting for our shows, which we rent separately.
We are asking for your help and your support, please come and see this production, it will help us purchase lights and will provide you with an evening or afternoon of laughter and fun.
There is nothing better when putting on a show then having full support of the community. One person in particular is the new Wappingers Central School district superintendent Mr. James Parla. Mr. Parla had only wonderful things to say about Proscenium. Mr. Parla believes that theater and all the arts are a core part of education. Being an honorary member of the Triem Honors Society which is a special honors society designed for students with focuses within the arts, Mr. Parla feels that it is imperative for students to be exposed to all aspects of the arts. Mr. Parla said quite plainly that Proscenium's previous production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was the best high school production I have ever seen. and he looks forward to seeing Lost in Yonkers as we as an organization Aspire to higher levels.
We have Mr. Pochintesta and Mr. Parlas support, we are asking for yours as well.
Whether, youve seen and enjoyed Lost In Yonkers numerous times before, or whether this is a Neil Simon play youve yet to discover, the John Jay Proscenium production is one youll want to see, and tell friends about.
Lost in Yonkers will be performed in the Rodger Hanson Performance Hall at John Jay Senior High School on February 6th at 7:30 pm and February 7th at 2:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased in our box office at John Jay high school on Wednesday nights from 7pm-9pm and every Saturday or on our website www.jproscenium.org. We hope to see you there, do not miss this once in a lifetime experience.
Sincerely,

Graeme McEneany

PLEASE READ....
Mr George Dunton Widener, 50, from Elkins Park, PA, was the son of P.A.B. Widener, a member of the board of the Fidelity Trust Company of Philadelphia, the bank that controlled IMM, the owners of the White Star Line. He was heir to probably the largest fortune in Philadelphia. However, George Widener was a wealthy man in his own right running a successful street-car firm in Philadelphia.
Mr Widener and family had been staying at the Paris Ritz Hotel and he, his wife Eleanor Widener, son Harry Elkins Widener and their two servants Edwin Keeping and Emily Geiger boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg. The Widener's occupied cabins C-80/82.
On the afternoon of April 14th, Widener and his wife were standing on the promenade deck talking to J. Bruce Ismay when Captain Smith passed them on his way aft. Without comment he handed Ismay one of the ice warnings from the White Star liner Baltic, Ismay simply put the message in his pocket and headed below.
Later that day Captain Smith joined a dinner party given in his honour by the Wideners in the ship's la carte restaurant. The guests included, John B. Thayer and Mrs Thayer, Major Archibald Butt, Clarence Moore and William Carter and his wife Lucile Carter. A little before 9pm the Captain excused himself and headed for the bridge. After the ladies had retired the men sat in the smoking room talking. They were still there when the iceberg was struck.
Later, George and Harry escorted Eleanor to lifeboat 4. While the boats continued loading Colonel Archibald Gracie observed George Widener leaning against a railing in deep discussion with John B. Thayer, Mrs Thayer had also boarded boat #4.
As the ship sank deeper the Wideners and Mr Thayer were joined by Charles Duane Williams. All four men died in the disaster.
Notes
At the church of St Paul in Elkins Park are two Tiffany Windows in memory of George and Harry Widener. The interior of the church was rebuilt in 1912-13, thanks to Mrs Widener. George was the senior warden at St Pauls and Chair of the Board of Commissioners of Cheltenham Township. Both the Church and The Township presented Resolutions to Mrs Widener

SOME TITANIC MYTHS
It was rumored that the cursed Hope Diamond was on the Titanic when it sunk. False. The cursed stone was in the possession of Washington socialite Mrs Evelyn McLean who was not on the ship.
Along the same lines, a rumor circulated that a cursed Egyptian mummy on board was the reason the ship sunk. The cursed mummy went by the name of Princess of Amen-Ra (aka shipwrecker).False. No evidence of a mummy on board (well no Egyptian ones!).
One of the ship workers was accidentally sealed in the hull. False
One of the workers painted we defy God to sink her on the stern. False
The reason the great ship sank was because the bottle of champagne used to christen the Titanic did not break on the first swing, which is believed to be very bad luck for a ship. False. Good try, but the Titanic was not christened on launching, White Star Line didnt believe in the custom.
The band played on as the ship went down. Half True. The band played until 2am, 20 minutes before the ship sank. They had to stop playing as the deck began to tilt.
The Titanic sank in one piece. False. When the ship was discovered in 1985 it was apparent the ship had broken into two parts. The weight of the stern rising out of the water was simply too great. She broke apart between the 3rd and 4th funnels.
First Officer, Mr Murdoch shot himself on the bridge when he realised all hope was lost. False. Witnesses say Murdoch was in total charge of the vessel at the time of the accident and up until the end.
When the late Colonel John Jacob Astors will was read the newly widowed Madeliene was to inherit $5 million, under the proviso that she never remarried. True. Unfortunately the 19 year old could not keep the agreement, remarrying 5 years later and losing all claims to the Astor millions.
My favourite rumor is that the ship was sunk on purpose and whatsmore it was the Olympia (Titanics sister ship) and not the Titanic. All part of an elaborate insurance scam. The two ships were switched when they were dry-docked together. Reason; because the Olympia had received serious damage after a collison in 1911 and the White Star Line wanted to right it off and claim the insurance. Another nice try but rumor is False. Both ships were under insured relative to their value and besides prior to the scrapping of the Olympia the damage was still evident on its hull.
Another rumor to have circulated was that the Titanics hull number was 390904 , which, when seen in a mirror or written using mirror writing, looks like NO HOPE. But rumor is False. Yard numbers make up part of the hull number and the Titanics yard number was 401 and if you were thinkingthe Olympias yard number was 400.
There was no room numbered 13 on the Titanic. True. Superstitiously 13 is an unlucky number so it was often avoided as room or floor numbers.
There were passengers travelling on the Titanic under false names. True. An unbelievable 15 of them! One man used a false name to get a room in first class (he only had a second class ticket) another man had kidnapped his children and was making a run for it.
It has been rumoured that a cat and her litter of kittens got off the titanic at Southampton which was seen by some of the crew members as a bad omen. Though there was a cat and her litter reported on the ship duringher maiden voyage, there is no evidence to confirm the cat and her kittens did a runner.
It has long been rumored that Colonel John Jacob Astor, being such a great animal lover, ran to the dog kennels where his Airedale, Kitty, was being held and freed all of the animals before the ship sunk. Cant Verify. It has also been claimed that Robert Daniel was the man in question.

"When anyone asks me how I can best describe my experience in nearly forty years at sea, I merely say, uneventful. Of course there have been winter gales, and storms and fog and the like. But in all my experience, I have never been in any accident or any sort worth speaking about. I have seen but one vessel in distress in all my years at sea. I never saw a wreck and never have been wrecked nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in disaster of any sort."

Harold Bride
Harold Sydney Bride was born on 11th January, 1890 in Nunhead, South London, the youngest of three sons of Arthur John Larner Bride and Mary Ann Lowe.
After leaving school Bride trained as a Marconi operator, he completed his training in July 1911 and went to sea soon afterward. His first ship was the Haverford, he later served on the Lusitania, La France and finally the Anselm, before joining the Titanic.
Bride and his colleague John 'Jack' George Phillips boarded the Titanic at Belfast.
When he signed onto the Titanic at Southampton on 9th April,1912, Bride gave his address as Bannisters Hotel (Southampton). As an employee of the Marconi company, he received monthly wages of 2 26s.
Sharing the wireless equipment with John Phillips the two agreed that Phillips would take the 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift and Bride the 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. shift.
On the night of the sinking Bride relayed messages to and from Captain Smith on the bridge regarding the progress of the Carpathia and other ships in the vicinity, whilst Phillips worked the key:
"I was conscious of waking up and hearing Phillips sending to Cape Race. I read what he was sending. It was a traffic matter. I remembered how tired he was and got out of bed to relieve him. I didn't even feel the shock. I hardly knew it had happened until after the captain had come to us. There was no jolt whatsoever.
I was standing by Phillips telling him to go to bed when the captain put his head into the cabin.
'We've struck an iceberg,' the captain said, 'and I'm having an inspection made to tell what it has done for us. You better get ready to send out a call for assistance. But don't send it until I tell you.'
The captain went away and in ten minutes, I should estimate the time, he came back. We could hear a terrible confusion outside, but there was not the least thing to indicate that there was any trouble. The wireless was working perfectly. 'Send the call for assistance,' said the captain, barely putting his head in the door. 'What call should I send?' Phillips asked. 'The regulation international call for help. Just that.'
Then the captain was gone. Phillips began to send CQD He flashed away at it and we were joking while he did so. All of us made light of the disaster. We joked that way while he flashed signals for about five minutes. Then the captain came back. 'What are you sending?' he asked. 'CQD' Phillips replied. The humour of the situation appealed to me. I cut in with a little remark that made us all laugh, including the captain. 'Send SOS,' I said. 'It's the new call, and it may be your last chance to send it.' Phillips with a laugh changed the signal to SOS."
Both operators stayed at their post after their release, but were forced out onto the deck by the water surging into the wireless room: "I noticed as I came back from one trip that they were putting off women and children in lifeboats. I noticed that the list forward was increasing. Phillips told me the wireless was growing weaker. The captain came and told us our engine rooms were taking water and that the dynamos might not last much longer. We sent that word to the Carpathia.
I went on deck and looked around. The water was pretty close up to the boat deck. There was a great scramble aft, and how poor Phillips continued to work through it I don't know. He was a brave man. I learned to love him that night and I suddenly felt a great reverence to see him standing there sticking to his work while everybody else was raging about. I will never live to forget the work of Phillips during the last awful fifteen minutes.
I looked out. The boat deck was awash. Phillips clung on sending and sending. He clung on for about ten minutes, or maybe fifteen minutes after the captain had released him. The water was then coming into our cabin.
While he worked something happened I hate to tell about. I was back at my room getting Phillips's money for him, and as I looked out the door I saw a stoker, or somebody from below decks, leaning over Phillips from behind. Phillips was too busy to notice what the man was doing. The man was slipping the life belt off Phillips's back."
Bride and Phillips managed to deter the stoker and left the wireless room and headed out to the boat deck:
"From aft came the tunes of the band. It was a ragtime tune, I don't know what... Phillips ran aft and that was the last I ever saw of him alive. "I went to the place I had seen the collapsible boat on the boat deck, and to my surprise I saw the boat and the men still trying to push it off. I guess there wasn't a sailor in the crowd. They couldn't do it. I went up to them and was just lending a hand when a large wave came awash of the deck. "The big wave carried the boat off. I had hold of an oarlock and I went off with it. The next I knew I was in the boat. "But that was not all. I was in the boat and the boat was upside down and I was under it. And I remember I realised I was wet through, and that whatever happened I must not breathe, for I was underwater. I knew I had to fight for it and I did. How I got out from under the boat I do not know, but I felt a breath of air at last... I felt I simply had to get away from the ship. She was a beautiful sight then. Smoke and sparks were rushing out of her funnel. There must have been an explosion, but we heard none. We only saw the big stream of sparks. The ship was gradually turning on her nose, just like a duck does that goes down for a dive.
Bride recalled that he could hear the band playing right up to the end, but not Nearer My God To Thee!": he recalled them playing Autumn. He also recollected that there was little suction when the ship went down. He was finally able to climb aboard the upturned hull of Collapsible B.
"There was just room for me to roll on the edge. I lay there not caring what happened. Somebody sat on my legs. They were wedged in between slats and were being wrenched. I had not the heart to ask the man to move. It was a terrible sight all around - men swimming and sinking. I lay where I was, letting the man wrench my feet out of shape. Others came near. Nobody gave them a hand. The bottom-up boat already had more men than it would hold and it was sinking."
Harold Bride had survived but but suffered from badly frozen and crushed feet, due to the effects of the cold and the position in which he was sitting on the collapsibles hull. He described the rescue by the Carpathia:
"One man was dead. I passed him and went up the ladder, although my feet pained terribly. The dead man was Phillips. He had died on the raft from exposure and cold, I guess. He had been all in from work before the wreck came. He stood his ground until the crisis had passed, and then he collapsed, I guess. But I hardly thought that then. I didn't think much of anything. I tried the rope ladder. My feet pained terribly, but I got to the top and felt hands reaching out to me. The next I knew a woman was leaning over me in a cabin and I felt her hand waving back my hair and rubbing my face."
On the voyage to New York aboard Carpathia Bride and an exhausted Harold Cottam worked together to send countless personal messages and names of the saved to land. Incidentally, Bride and Cottam had met before the disaster and were good friends. After the tragedy they stayed in contact for many years.
After a spell in hospital Harold Bride returned to England and finally returned to work as a wireless operator. During the First World War, he served on the steamer Mona's Isle as a telegraphist.
Harold was married [c. 1919] to Lucy Johnstone Downie, and the couple had three children. Harold disliked discussing the Titanic, being deeply disturbed by the whole experience, particularly by the loss of his colleague and friend Jack Phillips, whose bravery and steadfastness never left him; he disliked the celebrity that went along with being a Titanic survivor and thus decided to flee the attention and moved with his family to Scotland where he worked as a travelling salesman.
Harold Sidney Bride lived out the rest of his days in Scotland, living in comparative obscurity. He died on 29th April 1956, aged 66.

Review: Titanic Lunt Fontanne Theatre, NYC - 1997 Review by John Kenrick The only show I can remember that faced this much advance contempt from the theatrical community was the legendary Carrie. A Broadway musical about the most infamous disaster in sea-faring history? Talk about a guaranteed flop! Even the hallowed New York Times took the unprecedented step of publishing an advance Sunday editorial ridiculing the show, saying that it had no chance of succeeding. As a life-long student of the Titanic's story, I was as skeptical as anyone. What were they going to do, tap dance their way to the bottom? However, I kept warning friends that Titanic's team were experts at making musicals out of impossible ideas. Composer Maury Yeston made Fellini sing in Nine, and librettist Peter Stone made some history of his own with the book to 1776 -- it's never wise to belittle the talents of proven masters. These master craftsmen, along with a magnificent cast, came through with a musical that overcame lukewarm reviews to set box-office records at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and win the lion's share of the 1997 Tony Awards. All this happened months before the unrelated blockbuster movie Titanic brought renewed interest in the subject. What explains it? Of course, the story of the liner RMS Titanic has captivated the public ever since the tragic night in 1912 when the ship struck an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic, taking over 1,500 men, women and children of every class with her. It's a horrifying moment that instantly etched itself into the communal consciousness of Western civilization. Along with an endless parade of books, articles, films and documentaries, several stage musicals have set scenes aboard the Titanic (Cavalcade, Little Me) and The Unsinkable Molly Brown was based loosely on the life of a famous Titanic survivor. Making a musical about the sinking itself was another matter entirely. Peter Stone's book is the first key. Using the same approach he used in 1776, Stone sticks to the essential historical facts, making only the changes that were necessary to provide effective dramatic continuity. He focuses the action on a handful of passengers and crew , all of whom actually existed. The result gives a human face to this often anonymous event. In the tragedy-strewn context of history, it means little to say 1,500 died in a sinking. However, it matters tremendously that individuals like Isidor and Ida Straus or Kate Murphy died. In other dramatic versions of the Titanic story, including the smash-hit movie, we don't get to know so many real-life characters nearly as well as we do in this musical. The next key lies in Maury Yeston's score. He invokes the period sounds of 1912, but gives them a fresh sound that is unmistakably from our end of the century. The chorales, especially "Godspeed Titanic", soar with melodic power worthy of Elgar, and echoes of Joplin ("Doing the Latest Rag") and Gilbert and Sullivan ("What a Remarkable Age This Is") pepper the score. The showstopping love song "Still" sounds as if it escaped from Victor Herbert's trunk, but its melodic construction and poetic lyric carry Maury Yeston's stylistic signature. Larry Keith and Alma Cuervo sing the song for all it's worth, creating the kind of moment musical theatre lovers live for. Anyone who wonders if the musical is a dead art form only has to experience the cheers and tears that fill the theatre when "Still" electrifies an audience. This score is very much the work of the man who gave us Nine's haunting "In a Very Unusual Way" and Grand Hotel's irresistible "Love Can't Happen." The amazing opening sequence, set entirely to music, introduces us to more than thirty characters, gives us a shipload of Titanic statistics, and does all this with some humor and breathtaking moments of heartfelt emotion. I also found "Ladies Maid," the number where third class passengers share dreams of what they want to be in America, a far more moving expression of the immigrant experience than anything in the scores of Rags or the current Ragtime. To my mind, Titanic is Yeston's finest accomplishment to date, and I anxiously await whatever he comes up with next. If any musical was un-stageable, this should have been it, but director Richard Jones and his design team came up with an ingenious concept that allows the audience to follow the action on several decks at once. They even take us to the crow's nest for the chilling moment when the ship has its fatal encounter with that iceberg. As complicated as the technology for all this must be, the overall look of Titanic is sleek and simple. Rather than try to re-create a 1912 ocean liner onstage, the designers give vivid impressions: a stretch of wooden deck, the shadow of a chandelier, or a bit of railing. The only realistic, fully furnished set is the first class smoking room, and The sinking sequence late in Act Two is a triumph of hydraulics, but it is also a horrifying, painfully human theatrical moment. As the ship tilts, the people on deck slide to their deaths and ship's architect Thomas Andrews in the smoking room meets his end amid flying glassware and furniture. I still wonder how this amazing scene is re-enacted eight times a week without causing all sorts of injuries, but the effect on audiences is powerful. The physical effects do not upstage the human drama, a refreshing change from the spectacles London has been inundating us with for far too long. The talent on stage at the Lunt-Fontanne is a reminder why casting directors Julie Hughes and Barry Moss are considered the best in the business. Only people in or near the theatrical profession would know names like Alma Cuervo (Mrs. Straus), Larry Keith (Mr. Straus) or Judith Blazer (Caroline Neville), and no one had ever heard of newcomers like Brian d'Arcy James (stoker Fred Barrett) or Martin Moran (radioman Harold Bride). True, some musical buffs would know Michael Cerveris (Thomas Andrews) from his appearance in Tommy, or David Garrison (J. Bruce Ismay) from shows like A Day In Hollywood, but by and large this is a cast of solid musical theatre pros who make every moment in this show count. The sight of them all lined up in he opening scene (and again, so poignantly in the finale) singing "Fortune's winds sing Godspeed to thee" will live in my memory. There is no doubt in my mind that Yeston and Stone's Titanic is the finest and most important new American musical in over a decade. Three cheers to the Dodgers and their partners for the courage to produce such a show, and three more cheers for the theater-going public that has so enthusiastically embraced this unlikely hit. Sail on indeed, great ship!

As we approach the end of the summer and try to put the parameters in place for our upcoming auditions we really need to have an idea of our participating or returning students, this upcoming season holds a great deal of opportunity since we are doing 4 major shows. We can then gear the remaining workshops to your best advantage and help you succeed.
Please submit your AUDITION FORM(you can find it on the website along with an audition packet) as soon as possible; we really need these to better put our schedules together. If you do not plan on participating, please let us know.
Thanks very much and enjoy the rest of the summer

****Notes from the Board****

Hi everyone! Notes from the Board is a new way for the Proscenium board to inform the Proscenium community about what is being discussed in our meetings and to keep you updated on the progress throughout our exciting season ahead! This week was a very productive week! The Board and advisors' principal task was moving forward on our joint holiday production with Van Wyck Drama, "Celebrate Me Home."

Many creative ideas were brought to the table this week, and we discussed a finale that will definitely be remembered by all audience members!! This production will include songs and dances from holidays celebrated throughout the world in the winter. "Celebrate Me Home" will be on Saturday, December 5th at 7:30pm, and Sunday, December 6th at 2:00pm. Tickets for the show will soon be available on the website and are $8 per seat, and children age 5 and under are free!

Andrew McCarthy, set crew, has created a work calendar for his crew to follow counting down the weeks until "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," November 13, 14, and 15. Along with Andrew, Danielle Franzen from art crew is also creating a calendar. There is a lot of art work, painting, and building needed for this production, so these calendars will help these crews stay on schedule so the Proscenium stage will look amazing once again!! "Joseph" will be here before we know it!

"Lost in Yonkers," which will be performed on Saturday, February 6th at 7:30pm and Sunday, February 7th at 2:00pm is going to be an exciting production for Proscenium because it is being directed by student, Trevor Schlam! Trevor assistant directed a scene in last seasons production of "West Side Story" and has now taken on his own show! Tickets for "Lost in Yonkers" will soon be available on the website at $8 for adults and $5 for students/seniors.

Currently pieces of the set for our spring production of "Titanic," April 16th-18th, are being designed, and students are already working hard memorizing lyrics and dances for auditions at the workshop classes being held at the new Fishkill Rec. Center on Rt. 52 on Wednesdays from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. These workshops are a huge help to all interested in auditioning for either dancing or singing roles!

We will be holding our 2nd annual Attic Sale on Saturday, September 26th. Donations of items will be accepted at the Meet the Members event on September 10 from 7pm to 9pm. Please ask your folks to look through the attic and consider donating to this important fundraiser!

We would like to remind everyone that it is critical to not only read the notes from the board, but to also scroll down and read the other information put on the communications link. I hope these events and information has made you even more excited!!...I cant wait for the season to begin! Make sure to always check the Proscenium website for updates and for new information weekly!

Thanks everyone and hope to see you at the shows!

Nicole
